As a former State advocate for the elderly (ombudsman), I visited many care homes each month in the 1980's. I decided to open my own homes when I witnessed the lack of activities in smaller homes and the isolation of many residents in the larger facilities. We make sure that each of our residents live a full, active life - from daily outdoor exercise to weekly restaurant, beauty parlor and senior center outings. Having something to look forward to each day and each week helps our residents to stay more alert and, of course, more active. The average stay of our residents is from 5 - 7 years - almost double the national average of 3 years and I think that's a direct result of the very personal care we provide. Our care providers also remain with us for years and therefore get to know our residents on a very personal basis. Our administrator has been with Country Gardens for over 13 years and our residents love her personality and enthusiasm. We are truly a family unit in each of our two lovely homes and yet the care is professional as well as very personal. If a resident loses weight, our administrator will find out why. If a resident begins to act differently, our care managers will report it to our administrator - who will find out why (usually a UTI)! Whether residents are gardening on our patio, reading in their room or frail and bedridden, they feel safe and well cared for at Country Gardens.
