    The Law Offices of Helene V. Wenzel & ElderWorks

    Helene V. Wenzel is a solo practitioner in Estate Planning and ElderLaw. Her estate planning practice includes the preparation of wills, trusts, durable powers of attorney and advance health care directives; trust administration; and probate. Her Elder Law practice focuses on planning for incapacity; conservatorships; long-term and Nursing Home care; asset management and Medi-Cal eligibility. She also works with clients on Domestic Partnership and LGBT issues.

    Helene is currently the President of the Northern California Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (, the largest elderlaw association of attorneys in the country. The local quarterly meetings feature attorneys and speakers on issues affecting seniors, including capacity, long-term care and nursing home care, elder abuse and in-home care issues.

    Before becoming an attorney, Helene taught undergraduate, graduate and Elderhostel classes on literature and contemporary issues at San Francisco State University and Yale University. She was adjunct faculty at John F. Kennedy University School of Law, where she taught Wills and Trusts. Helene earned a Ph.D. in French language and literature from the University of California at Berkeley in 1977. She was Coordinator of the Women Studies Program at S.F.S.U. from 1977 to 1980 and Associate Director of the Women’s Center at U.C. Berkeley from 1974-1977.

    She received her J.D. from New College of California School of Law in San Francisco in 1994 and was admitted to the California State Courts, U.S. District Court - Northern District of California and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 1994.

    Before opening her own practice, Helene was Staff Attorney at California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR) where she routinely worked with private bar attorneys, consumers and legal aid on questions of long-term care, capacity and Medi-Cal issues.

    She is regularly a speaker on elder law, estate planning and LGBT issues at Continuing Education of the Bar programs for attorneys, and at national, state and local professional and community gatherings.

    Services are provided by appointment at my office, and at their homes for clients who have difficulty traveling to the office. Appointments are available on Saturdays when necessary.
